Vision Statement

The Weitchpec Elementary School - Yurok Magnet Program offers a unique opportunity to study core academic subjects from a local native-based perspective. Curriculum developed around local American Indian themes weave the local history, arts, language, science, mathematics, culture, and more into daily classroom activities that meet the California content and performance standards and Yurok Tribal educational goals. Daily Yurok language lessons and conversation, along with a a traditional "Settle-Up" disciplinary systemwill be integrated. The wisdom of a circle of Elders will support and help guide the curriculum and also permeate the learning environment. Modern computer technology, applied educational activities, and ancient Yurok knowledge will come together during the instructional day to enable students to meet today's challenges.

The Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District and the Yurok Tribe have formed a unique collaborative relationship whereby joint resources will foster the academic success of all students. Instruction: thematic curricular units cross all content areas; applied/hands-on inquiry based learning is being developed. A three-year program development process is required before reaching full implementation.
